The work on textiles, photography, printmaking, papermaking, music, and video visually explores intersections of cultures and media.

As the eleven artists in the exhibition, we come from diverse backgrounds. We are from both sides of the Mexico/US border and speak five languages. Our group is a blend of cultures and approaches. These differences have allowed us to examine what we share and honor, what makes us unique.

The intersection of our techniques, artistic styles, visions, and stories produced three key themes. Our work honors and remembers loved ones who have passed and the fleeting nature of life. We understand the potential of migration to both destroy and cultivate traditions. And finally, we recognize the importance of our shared histories.

Our collective work asks questions about what it means to cross and connect worlds: life and death, art and craft, and the borders between countries, languages, cultures, and classes.

Participating Artists

VIRGINIA ÁLVAREZ JUÁREZ
San Bartolomé Ayutla, Oaxaca, Mexico

MIRIAM CAMPOS CORNELIO
San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca, Mexico

ANA PAULA FUENTES QUINTANA
Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico

RODRIGO HERNÁNDEZ QUERO
San Pablo de Mitla, Oaxaca, Mexico

JOHN HITCHCOCK
Madison, Wisconsin, USA

CAROLYN KALLENBORN
Madison, Wisconsin, USA

DAKOTA MACE
Madison, Wisconsin, USA

MOISES MARTINEZ VELASCO
San Pedro Cajonos, Oaxaca, Mexico

ERASTO “TITO” MENDOZA RUIZ
Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico

ALVARO TORRES CISNEROS
Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico

ROBERTO TORRES MATA
Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Thank you/Agradecimientos:

Project Assistant
Betsy Parker

Translators
Cassidy Reis
Denise Castillo

Event Organization
Beatriz Botero
Carolina Sarmiento

Center for Design and Material Culture Ruth Davis Design Gallery
Sarah Carter
Laura Sims Peck
Adriana Barrios

School of Human Ecology University of Wisconsin–Madison

Jane Rafferty Thiele Professorship

Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies

The Anonymous Fund

And the

Wisconsin Alumni Research Association

About the Artist

Carolyn Kallenborn, Professor Emerita from the University of Wisconsin, is an internationally acclaimed artist working with textiles, film, installation, and community projects.
